In a collaborative effort to bridge education and industry, Wayne Community College and Lenoir Community College have launched the Advanced Manufacturing Academy, a summer youth apprenticeship program. Thirty-five high school students from Wayne and Lenoir counties will participate, gaining hands-on experience and earning industry-recognized credentials. This initiative, backed by the Southeastern Education and Economic Development (SEED) initiative and sponsored by Smithfield Foods, aims to cultivate the next generation of skilled workers in the manufacturing and agriculture sectors.

Participants will explore careers in engineering, maintenance, machining, industrial systems, and mechatronics. The program offers a blend of classroom instruction, paid education, a monthly stipend, and weekly field trips to local businesses. “Your dedication and hard work will pave the way for a bright and successful future,” said WCC President Patty Pfeiffer. The program, which began on June 10, represents a significant opportunity for students to earn while they learn, setting a precedent for future youth apprenticeships in North Carolina.
