Wayne County Claims First State Championship in Decades

Third baseman ready to tag out the arm of a sliding runner during a baseball game

After decades of near misses, Wayne County Post 11 has finally captured its first state championship in American Legion baseball. The team sealed their place in history with a decisive 7-2 victory over Wilmington Post 10, capping off an undefeated run in the N.C. Senior American Legion state tournament.

The game’s outcome was never in doubt as starter Casey Culbreth allowed just three hits over five innings. Wayne County’s timely hitting and solid defense kept Wilmington at bay, and two-RBI double by Lawson Tyndall in the fifth inning put the game out of reach. As the final out was recorded, Post 11 players celebrated their long-awaited victory with a jubilant dogpile on the field. They now advance to the Southeast Regional, with hopes of continuing their championship run.
