Proposed Budget Eliminates School Librarians in Franklin County

Franklin County Schools are poised to eliminate all librarian positions next school year as part of a proposed budget. Superintendent Rhonda Schuhler announced the decision, citing financial challenges due to inflation, building maintenance, and the expiration of federal COVID-19 relief funds. To bridge a budget gap, the district seeks an additional $3.36 million from county commissioners. The librarian roles will be restructured into classroom positions, with media assistants taking over library duties.

The North Carolina School Library Media Association (NCSLMA) has strongly opposed the cuts, arguing that media assistants lack the specialized training of certified librarians. Despite a petition with nearly 800 signatures presented by concerned librarians, Schuhler stated that the decision is final. The proposed budget will be reviewed by county commissioners on May 20.
