Hillsborough was filled with Scottish flair on Saturday, September 26, as the Outlandish Hillsborough Scottish Festival brought a full day of music, history and family-friendly fun to North Carolina.

The celebration featured live music from Big Celtic Fun, BogTurtle and other performers, along with bagpipes, traditional dancing and interactive activities for visitors of all ages. Festivalgoers could also step into the world of Outlander by visiting Hillsborough’s own Craigh na Dun and exploring the town’s connections to Scottish history.

The event offered plenty of opportunities to learn about the past, including Gaelic storytelling about Highlanders’ immigration to North Carolina and a presentation exploring the real-life history behind the stories that inspired Outlander. Visitors could also meet the Regulators, enjoy character reenactments and watch demonstrations of traditional athletics and weaving.

A marketplace featured handmade artwork, leather goods, Celtic-inspired metalwork and other unique items. The festival also included a tasting table featuring locally grown bourbon, giving attendees another way to enjoy the area’s modern take on Scottish-inspired culture.

With its mix of history, music, storytelling and Outlander-themed fun, the Outlandish Hillsborough Scottish Festival offered a memorable way to celebrate Hillsborough’s Scottish heritage.
