NC Wildlife Commission Tracks Fox Squirrel Sightings Along Coastal Areas

The North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission is seeking public assistance in tracking fox squirrel sightings along the state’s coastal areas. Recently, these larger-than-average squirrels have been spotted in Currituck and other regions, sparking interest in their potential range expansion.

Fox squirrels, nearly twice the size of gray squirrels, are typically found in mature longleaf pine and open oak forests. However, sightings in coastal regions have prompted wildlife officials to investigate. Residents are encouraged to photograph the squirrels, note their location, and report sightings to the NC Wildlife Helpline, especially in areas like Currituck, Lincoln, Granville, and Madison counties.
