Fresh Produce Brings Healthy Choices to Nash County Schools

Students in Nash County are benefiting from fresh fruits and vegetables delivered directly from North Carolina farms through the state’s Farm to School program. Established in 1997, the initiative partners the N.C. Department of Agriculture, local growers, and school systems to ensure that students receive nutritious, locally-sourced produce.

This year, the program has already surpassed last year’s distribution of over a million cases of produce. The fresh produce, including strawberries, sweet potatoes, apples, and melons, has been a hit among students, making it easier to promote healthy eating habits. By providing fresh, additive-free options, the program supports both student health and local agriculture, reinforcing the connection between good nutrition and effective learning.
