The state of North Carolina will hold its official Juneteenth Flag-Raising Ceremony at the Durham County Courthouse on Wednesday at 11:30 a.m. This public event marks the second annual celebration of Juneteenth, a holiday commemorating June 19, 1865, when Union soldiers announced the end of the Civil War and the freedom of enslaved people in Galveston, Texas.

The ceremony will feature a prayer by Durham NAACP President Rev. Dr. Angelo Burch and a performance by singer Mary H. Scott. Buffalo Soldiers historical re-enactors will raise the Juneteenth flag alongside the Durham County Sheriff’s Honor Guards. The Juneteenth flag will be displayed from June 5 to 19 at the courthouse.
