After a 15-year hiatus, the DARE (Drug Abuse Resistance Education) program has returned to Lenoir County Schools, now under the updated branding of “Keepin’ it Real.” The 10-week initiative aims to guide fifth-grade students across all county schools toward making better life choices, not only by teaching about the dangers of drug and alcohol abuse but also addressing topics such as vaping, bullying, and responsible decision-making. The first lessons were held this week at Contentnea-Savannah School.
Assistant Superintendent Nicholas Harvey expressed enthusiasm for the program’s expanded focus, highlighting that it goes beyond drug prevention to equip students with tools for making smarter choices in all aspects of their lives. School officials believe the return of DARE will have a lasting, positive impact on the community’s youth.
