North Carolina’s second wind energy farm, Timbermill Wind, opened this July in Chowan County, marking a major step in the state’s clean energy efforts. The $300 to $400 million project will provide significant economic benefits to the region, boosting income for local landowners and creating new revenue for public services such as schools and infrastructure.
The farm, led by Apex Clean Energy, is now the largest taxpayer in the county, contributing $33 million in tax revenue. Local farmers are also gaining stable additional income through land leases, allowing them to continue harvesting crops while supporting renewable energy. As wind energy expands across North Carolina, other counties are looking to replicate Chowan’s success.
